Cancer Council Victoria is a non-profit cancer charity organisation involved in cancer research, patient support, cancer prevention and advocacy.
SUPPORT SERVICES
We provide support and evidence-based information to those affected by cancer, their families and friends.
The Cancer Council Helpline (13 11 20) is a confidential service where you can talk about your concerns and needs with experienced cancer and palliative care nurses, for the cost of a local call. The nurses can send you information and put you in touch with support services in your area.
They can link you to cancer survivors who've been through a similar experience, help if you're having trouble paying bills during your cancer diagnosis and treatment or if you're eligible, provide you and your family with a short holiday at no cost to you.
A Multilingual Cancer Information Line, for those that speak languages other than English, is also available, so you can access information in the language of your choice.
PREVENTION AND EARLY DETECTION
We promote behaviours that help prevent cancer occurring and spreading with education programs, which include Quit, PapScreen Victoria and SunSmart. The Victorian Family Cancer Genetics Service is for families at increased risk because of an inherited gene change.
Collaborative programs pushing policy and behavioural changes include Kids – 'Go for your life', Parent's Jury and the Obesity Prevention Policy Coalition.
CANCER RESEARCH
Our main research units are the Cancer Epidemiology Centre, which includes the Victorian Cancer Registry and Health 2020 (the Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study); and our Centre for Behavioural Research in Cancer.
Grants are administered to scientists working in laboratories, universities and hospitals by our Research Management Unit while our Clinical Trials office works with and supports the Victorian Cooperative Oncology Group.
Also housed in our offices:
* Victorian Cancer Agency
Coordinating and promoting the rapid translation of research into better clinical care.
* VicHealth Centre for Tobacco Control
Looking at legal, economic and social aspects of tobacco use.
Close associations are kept with the Victorian Breast Cancer Research Consortium and Victorian Cancer Biobank.
DONATIONS, FUNDRAISERS AND VOLUNTEERS
We have a range of programs for people to donate, including a comprehensive bequests program.
Our fundraising events include Relay for Life, Pink Ribbon Day, Daffodil Day, Girls Night In, the Cancer Arts Awards and Australia's Biggest Morning Tea.
Dedicated volunteers significantly contribute to our work at all levels.
